with videoA very emaciated polar bear wandered this week in one of the northernmost inhabited places in the world. The animal seemed to be asking the residents of the Russian port town for help: a metal can was attached to the bear’s tongue.

Video images show how the 2-year-old polar bear cub sticks her head through the bars of a wooden terrace. The man who is filming gets to touch her nose and pull on the can of condensed milk. But the man does not manage to get the iron off the tongue of the female bear – later called Monetoshka.
That was on Wednesday in Dikson, a port in northern Russia. The animal also went to other houses, but none of the more than 650 inhabitants of Dikson were able to help the animal, so the alarm was raised.

Zoo
A team from the Moscow Zoo was called up and flew some 3400 kilometers towards Dikson. They stunned the polar bear with a dart, after which they were able to remove the sharp metal casing and treat the bear’s tongue with an antibiotic.
“It’s a bear cub, a female, about 2 years old,” said Mikhail Alsjinetski, the zoo’s chief veterinarian. “The can came on the tongue of the polar bear and the semi-loose top of the can then clamped the tongue. The animal has been walking around for several days. She couldn’t eat or drink and the tongue swelled up.”

Fifty kilos of fish
After the rescue, the bear cub was helicoptered to a remote location about thirty miles from Dikson. There she is laid out on the tundra, with fifty kilos of fish strewn about her on the ground. Then the polar bear was resuscitated.
Alsjinetski expects the polar bear to recover. The specialists from the Moscow Zoo will remain nearby for some time to monitor the animal’s recovery.

Hungry Polar Bears
A team of Canadian and American scientists warned in a report this week that hungry polar bears are increasingly entering the inhabited world, according to Reuters news agency. Due to global warming, more and more of their habitat is melting and the animals are moving to the mainland. They try to satisfy their hunger in garbage dumps or near garbage cans. This is happening in Russia, Canada and Alaska, among others. Human waste can also pose a threat to animals, as was shown in the case of polar bear Monetoshka
