Christmas sales by small and medium retailers grew by an average of 2.63% compared to the same period in 2019. The data was collected through a survey by the Brazilian Association of Satellite Storekeepers (Ablos), with its more than 100 members, which together they represent more than 3,000 points of sale in the country. The survey takes into account the results of sales from the 1st to December 24th, 2021. For the association, the result was below expectations and there are concerns regarding the occupational costs of the malls in 2022.
“There was a small growth in sales this Christmas, but if applied to inflation, it is not real growth. We had another difficult year for commerce, with a lack of raw materials, inflation pushing prices, the increase in store occupancy costs and the correction of the rent by the IGP, which in the last 24 months had an increase of up to 47% in contracts”, he declares Mauro Francis, president of Ablos.
The survey noted a slight growth in sales in the clothing sector at physical stores, especially for brands that cater to the A and B public. For clothing stores, the growth indicated was 6%. In the food segment, the growth was 7.5%, the same registered in the jewelry sector. The biggest drop registered in the poll was in the accessories sector, with a drop of 15% in sales.
The association chose to make the comparison with 2019, since in 2020 the trade was still dealing with operating restrictions due to the pandemic. According to a survey by the Brazilian Association of Shopping Mall Store Owners (Alshop) released last Monday, establishments in the sector registered a real increase of 10% in Christmas sales compared to 2020.
Alshop estimates that sales within shopping centers add up to R$ 204 billion in the year to 2021, which would represent a growth of 58% compared to 2020. If compared to the turnover of 2019, however, a reduction of 3 is expected, 5% of sales.
