Pedro Sánchez announced this Monday the expansion of screening for newborns to detect congenital diseases and thus be able to treat them early (known as the 'heel test). He said this during a visit to the facilities of the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), in Oviedo.
In this way, as Sánchez explained, the portfolio of detectable diseases will be increased from seven to eleven, although the idea is to double the number. The objective, he indicated, is “to improve the well-being of the population and make the system more sustainable, so that health does not depend on income or each person's zip code.” «In addition, it means that in our country there is no equity, that there are great inequalities in access, because while there are autonomous communities where these seven diseases in the common portfolio are limited to certain ones, others detect up to thirty. That is why we are going to correct this problem and in the coming weeks what we are going to do is increase the portfolio of detectable diseases from 7 to 11,” he said.
The visit of the President of the Government to Asturias has been marked by the tensions of the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, with the regional government due mainly to the state of the train infrastructure and their schedule.
