While celebrating his 180th cap for Croatia on Sunday, Luka Modric took the opportunity to talk about his retirement. The midfielder, who turns 39 on Monday, is still playing at the top level, and continues to enjoy the glory days of Real Madrid and the Croatian national team.
Luka Modric seems to be here forever, but unfortunately that is not the case and his retirement is approaching. The Croatian celebrates his 39th birthday on Monday and gave himself a nice early present. On the occasion of his 180th cap for the Croatian national team and the victory against Poland in the Nations League, the Real Madrid player scored the only goal of the match with a sublime free kick. A match after which the goalscorer of the night spoke of his retirement. And for the moment, no one can know when that moment feared by all football fans will arrive, not even the main interested party.
“With me you never know. You have to take the matches one after the other. I can’t think about the future. When I no longer feel the flame in me, I will retire. I am the only one who can. Being able to feel this flame and make this decision, I am happy to still be here to help the team achieve new victories. At my age it is difficult to make predictions. In the meantime, I am still here,” declared Luka Modric, who still seems capable of working his magic.
Although he doesn’t seem to want to hang up his boots for the moment, the current season seems to be Luka Modric’s last at Real Madrid. At the beginning of the summer, the Croatian’s surprise extension at the Casa Blanca caused great joy among the Madrid fans. But after this 13th season in the Spanish capital, it seems unlikely that the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner will extend his adventure with Real Madrid again. What should be considered at the end of the season: a new challenge, or perhaps retirement? The future will tell.
