Mexico City.- Hours before the start of the discussion of the judicial reform in the committees, employees of the Judicial Branch began a protest outside the Chamber of Deputies.
The presence of around a hundred workers caused legislative staff to close the main entrance, located on Zapata Street.
The protesters carry banners with slogans against the reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and which contains around 100 modifications by Morena. “Political judges by vote. Who are we condemning today, sir? Political parties. Organized crime. The campaign sponsor,” reads one of the signs.
“Without judicial power, who will protect you?” is another slogan.
The Constitutional Affairs Committee is expected to begin discussing judicial reform at 11:00 a.m. According to the president of that legislative body, Morena member Juan Ramiro Robledo, the debate could extend until tomorrow. Judicial reform is the last one that the Committee will rule on before the end of the current Legislature. The objective is to have the rulings ready to be discussed and eventually approved by the plenary session in the 66th Legislature that will begin on September 1 and in which Morena and its allies will have a qualified majority.
