Hearing the son of Enzo Ferrari, vice president and shareholder, talk about artificial intelligence is already news in itself. History and future, analogue and digital magic, mechanics and software: all merged into one extraordinary brand. Ferrari, in fact,
But how do they use AI in Maranello? “We use it a lot – explained Piero Ferrari speaking at the second edition of the Business Ethics Summit, the international event on ethics applied to business, which has just taken place in Vatican City, at the headquarters of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences – and it is an extraordinary innovation. I’ve always worked with cars and we’ve never seen something like this.”
The topic on the table is obviously how AI can be used in F1. And Ferrari was very clear on this too, revealing that AI is widely used in the top automotive category. Very present. But how? “The data that a Formula 1 collects is almost infinite. So many that we have them processed immediately by artificial intelligence. Then the engineers study the result in detail and can easily narrow down their field of action.”
The Business Ethics Summit is a one-day event organized with the academic partnership of Boston College and involves 70 high-profile international participants, including CEOs, representatives of the Vatican, academics and the most important institutional players, to share their visions on business ethics. The format involves a three-minute speech for each participant. And so Ferrari goes fast too. And Ferrari explains that in this way we arrive at a rhuge time saving. “But this is also a way to manage a mass of data that would otherwise be impossible to study – continues the vice president – given that we get to incredibly small details, almost difficult to describe. On the other hand, we all know how even just one tenth less is very important for the performance of a Formula 1.”
But that is not all. Ferrari then explained that in Maranello they also “nurture” Artificial Intelligence in many other ways, not just with F1. For example, with the infinite amount of data arriving from the wind tunnel. Or even from the production chain. And this gives us a competitive advantage also on the sustainability front.” And finally, on electrification, Ferrari explained “that there are many other options such as synthetic fuels. And then I would like to remind you that all the vehicles in the world are responsible for only 7 percent of total emissions. Of course, we manufacturers must do our part, but everyone must contribute to the final result.”
