Buenos Aires police and Argentine federal police officers carried out an operation this Monday afternoon (6) at the headquarters of the Argentine Mutual Israelite Association (Amia), after a call reported that there would be a bomb at the location.
According to information from the Clarín newspaper, the call occurred at 2:20 pm (local time, the same as Brasília). Amia’s building was evacuated, as were neighboring buildings.
Buenos Aires police stopped traffic on nearby roads, while federal police entered the building with dogs trained to locate explosives. Firefighters also participate in the operation. According to Clarín, at first no bomb was found at the scene.
The tense situation occurs just weeks after the federal government raised the alert for terrorist attacks in Argentina.
This occurred because in April, Room II of Argentina’s Federal Court of Criminal Cassation attributed responsibility to Iran for the two biggest terrorist attacks in the history of the South American country: the attack in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people in 1994 at the Amia headquarters and the attack on the Israeli Embassy two years earlier, which left 29 people dead.
The judges concluded that the attacks were carried out by the terrorist group Hezbollah “under the inspiration, organization, planning and financing of state and para-state organizations subordinate” to Iran.
The decision paves the way for states and relatives of victims to sue Tehran in international courts.
