ZThe organizers had to cancel the “Light + Building” trade fair twice due to the pandemic. A trade fair that, since it was founded in 2000, has developed into an international meeting place for lighting planners, industry and trade. The war in Ukraine and the resulting energy crisis put the brakes on the third attempt. In the first week of October, one looked in vain for big names like Signify (the former lighting division of Philips) and also some luxury brands in the Frankfurt exhibition halls. The Chinese Osram successor Ledvance was present, but concentrated on offers for professional users who want to illuminate offices or workshops and warehouses. However, the remaining exhibitors showed what can be realized in one’s own home with modern lighting technology based on light-emitting diodes.
Saving energy was no longer the focus. The luminous efficacy of LEDs has almost doubled since their triumph in general lighting ten years ago. Values of 150 to 180 lumens per watt seem common. Lumen is the unit used to measure the luminous flux emitted by a source. For comparison: the extinct incandescent lamp had a little more than ten lumens per watt. As a result, it takes quite a long time to save a single kilowatt hour by switching off a modern lamp. The situation is different where halogen or fluorescent lamps are still used. In the coming year, stricter guidelines from the European Union will take effect, which will lead to a gradual phasing out of these types of construction. Of course, this is more likely to affect business people, especially since the compact fluorescent lamp, originally introduced as an “energy-saving lamp”, has long since disappeared from most living rooms and kitchens.
