According to local authorities in the Mexican state of Guerrero, at least 13 people died in a criminal attack on October 23.
The events occurred in the municipality of Coyuca de Benítez, part of the Costa Grande region of Guerrero. The EFE news agency assures that the attack occurred after 2:00 p.m., local time.
Most of the fatalities are police officers. According to the first reports, the agents were near the town of El Papayo, in the aforementioned municipality, when they were attacked by armed men.
Among the deceased are also two local public officials: the secretary of Public Security of the municipality, Alfredo Alonso López, and the director of the local Preventive Police, Honorio Salinas Garay.
Gabriel Alejandro Arturo Mendoza, Guerrero’s deputy prosecutor for Investigations, confirmed to local media the murder of at least 11 police officers; He stated that there is no further information about what happened.
However, he reported that there are two investigations underway – of which he did not give details – to see if there is any relationship with the events that occurred this Monday.
In addition to the deceased police officers and officials, other officers were injured and were taken to receive treatment. At the same time, the disappearance of six police officers and two patrol cars is also reported.
The deadly day reflects the violence that is increasing in Guerrero, where organized crime groups dispute control of local territories. Guerrero is in seventh place nationally in the number of homicides with 800 murders during the first six months of 2023, according to information from the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico.
