Frank Stephenson he is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious designers on the world automotive scene, with a glorious past in Ferrari, Maserati and McLaren just to name a few of the car manufacturers where he has worked. In judging the new models presented by the companies, the American designer has never refrained from reserving more or less harsh criticisms, as in the case of the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX: Stephenson did positively evaluate the work of the German brand, but at the same time contested it because in his opinion “it could make the electric concept aerodynamically more efficient”.
Recall that the elegant and luxurious battery-powered concept of the Star boasts a drag coefficient just 0.17, even better than the 0.20 of the EQS, which currently holds the lowest Cx title of any current production car. The German car manufacturer has decided to operate in this sense with the aim of obtaining the maximum possible autonomy without having to resort to a huge battery pack that would otherwise have weighed down the Vision EQXX. According to Stephenson, some design improvements could be made: for exterior mirrorsfor example, according to him Mercedes could opt for smaller rear cameras instead of traditional mirrors, a move that would have helped to further improve aerodynamics, while for what concerns the wheels Stephenson criticizes the absence of covers on the rear ones.
But that is not all. The US designer also pinches Mercedes for not having equipped the Vision EQXX with less prominent door handles, as well as for not having worked differently to modify the closing line of the front doors which in doing so reminds him of that of the Porsche Taycan. We will first see if the house of the Star will transform this concept car into a mass production car, and if it does, it will be interesting to understand which design elements it will modify.
