Something like this had never been seen. Verstappen in a nervous version, who argues with the car that doesn’t work, who punches the steering wheel, who shoots team radio poison, left everyone stunned in Imola during free practice. And not just for the many off-track exits during the first session: it is the final result – he finished his tests in fifth and seventh place – that makes us understand the enormous difficulties for the dominator of modern F1.
Obviously, it’s too early to talk about a crisis for a car-driver combination that has so far left crumbs to the competition, but such nervousness has never been seen before. And – to avoid any misunderstanding – it was Verstappen himself who explained it: “It was a difficult day – commented Max -. We have things to review because today went decidedly badly, we didn’t feel comfortable.”
The seventh stage of the World Championship – with Ferrari seeming to take a step forward, Mercedes being reborn and McLaren constantly growing – opened immediately with a nice twist. The best premise for a fiery weekend.
