For those with memory problems after having a stroke there are important news: a new research developed by a team of experts from the NTNU Psychology Department in Norway in fact he stated that the problem may be temporary.
The results of the Research were published in the Norwegian scientific journal Nevropsykologi (Neuropsychology).
Memory problems after a stroke: here’s what the research says
Stroke is sadly a widespread phenomenon in Norway, with around 60,000 Norwegians having suffered one. Stroke can have serious consequences, but not everyone is affected equally. Stroke sufferers often experience memory problems and impaired learning ability later on. However, this can be temporary.
“Memory improvement is common after a stroke, but there are large individual differences“, he has declared Ramune Grambaite, NTNU psychologist. Grambaite is Associate Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology e head of the neuropsychological clinic at the NTNU Department of Psychology.
A group of vascular disease (VaD) scholars wanted to clarify what memory changes they could observe during the first three months after a stroke. The data was collected at the Department of Neurology, Akershus University Hospital (Ahus).
“Approximately 1,000 stroke patients are admitted to Acus every year. The percentage of patients with mild stroke has increased in recent years. But the consequences in terms of concentration problems, reduced stamina and changes in memory function are also common in patients with mild strokes.“, he has declared Bente Thommessenphysician with a PhD, as well as head of Ahus.
These consequences can be difficult to detect during a short hospital stay. Follow-up by specialist health services later in the process is very important: “We examined 86 patients with neuropsychological tests one week and three months after a relatively mild stroke“Added Grambaite.
“Our study shows that about half of stroke patients had various forms of memory problems one week after the stroke. But within three months of the stroke, about a third of those with memory impairment had improved memory function “Grambaite explained.
Patients with memory problems due to stroke have regained the ability to learn and recognize things: “But some stroke survivors continue to suffer from memory problems and need to learn to live with it“, Specified Grambaite. She has carefully studied and followed many stroke sufferers through her work at the Ahus Department of Neurology, where she worked as a neuropsychologist for several years.
Stroke is one of the most important causes of disability in Norway. Approximately 11,000 stroke patients in this country every year. Strokes are often due to a blood clot in the brain (cerebral infarction), but about 10-15% of cases are due to a brain hemorrhage.
More stroke patients survive today than in the pastpartly thanks to improved emergency treatment and rehabilitation, but stroke remains a serious condition. It is not uncommon for people to experience varying degrees of disability, and some patients later experience anxiety, depression, and fatigue in addition to memory problems. Good follow-up, even from friends and family, becomes important.
On the website of the Ministry of Health, as regards Italy, we read: ” In Italy, stroke is the second leading cause of death, after ischemic heart disease, is responsible for 9-10% of all deaths and is the leading cause of disability. Every year in our country there are about 90,000 hospitalizations due to cerebral stroke, of which 20% are relapses. 20-30% of people affected by cerebral stroke die within one month of the event and 40-50% within the first year ”.
“Only 25% of stroke survivors recover completely, 75% survive with some form of disability, and of these half have a deficit so severe that they lose self-sufficiency. Stroke is more frequent after the age of 55, its prevalence doubles after every decade; 75% of strokes occur in people over the age of 65. The prevalence of stroke in people aged 65-84 is 6.5% (7.4% in men, 5.9% in women) “ .
“Stroke is a Latin term that means “blow” (in English stroke). In fact, it arises suddenly: a person in full well-being can experience typical symptoms that can be transient, remain constant or worsen in the following hours. When there is an interruption in the supply of oxygenated blood or an extravasation of blood in an area of the brain, the nerve cells in that area are killed. Consequently, the neurological functions controlled by that area (which may involve the movement of an arm or leg, speech, sight, hearing, balance or other) are lost “ .
