The former mayor of Madrid Manuela Carmena issued a statement this morning through her Instagram account about the case of Sumar’s former spokesperson, Íñigo Errejón, accused of sexual harassment and assault. “It seems horrible to me. I could never think or hear anything related to that behavior. It hurts me deeply because of what the victims of this behavior are going through and it hurts me that a person who was an ideological reference on the left could have had that attitude,” the judge wrote.
Carmena was one of the founders of Más Madrid in 2018, a space she shared with Errejón, and she gave her opinion on the case a day after Rita Maestre, from the same party and the politician’s ex-partner. In the brief text of the former Madrid councilor, she acknowledges that she received the news as a “great shock.” “Then I thought I should reflect on what happened,” Carmena continues.
Since last week and after Errejón’s resignation, there have been more and more testimonies from women who accuse the former spokesperson of Yolanda Díaz’s party. Although at the moment the only complaint against Errejón is that of the actress Elisa Mouliaá, other people have spoken publicly anonymously and have reported other sexist or humiliating behavior.
“I dare to suggest that we should know about politicians, not only their political and intellectual lucidity, but also their emotional intelligence. That is, we must know about their emotional intelligence, their sensitivity and how they care and love,” Carmena concludes in her statement.
