General Popov was not released from the pre-trial detention center; he mocked the court decision
The former commander of the 58th Guards Combined Arms Army, Major General Ivan Popov, was not released from the pre-trial detention center. The court left the appeal without satisfaction.
Popov, accused of fraud on an especially large scale, was taken into custody on May 21. He is charged with theft with causing damage. The defense tried to appeal his arrest, since Popov came to interrogations on time, and also cannot put pressure on witnesses and hide abroad.
Also, against the backdrop of what happened, many military men spoke about Popov’s high authority. According to them, he is one of the most respected generals of the Russian army, since he was able to stop the enemy’s counter-offensive in the Zaporozhye direction in June 2023.

Popov was in a good mood and joked in court
During the consideration of the complaint in court on May 24, the major general addressed the journalists who were filming him and mentioned Zaporozhye. “It would be better if you filmed so actively in Zaporozhye,” he told reporters.
According to Telegram– Shot channel, Popov was guarded in the courtroom by five people. Before the meeting began, he talked with the lawyer and even laughed at something.

After the court rejected the complaint against the arrest, Popov said: “It could have been worse.” In addition, when the judge noted that the defendant would have to “stand up more often than usual” during the hearing, he replied that standing up is useful. Later, the prosecution asked the judge to make the hearing closed and remove media representatives from the room.
Popov is charged with grand theft
The charges against the major general became known on May 24.
A criminal case has been initiated against the military man under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud”). He is charged with theft by fraud causing damage on an especially large scale. Popov does not admit his guilt.
