The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said this Monday (27) that the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, “is the Herod of this time”, for “bombing Muslim and Christian children” and “going over” the International Court of Justice (ICJ), highest court of the UN.
“Netanyahu is the Herod of this time (…) And what does the United States say? And what does Europe say? They are silent. Genocidal silence (…) One of the most terrible genocides (…) that humanity has experienced since the time of Hitler,” said Maduro in his weekly program on the Venezuelan state television network VTV.
Although he spoke in “silence”, European Union (EU) countries agreed this week to request a meeting with Israel to assess respect for human rights in that country within the scope of their bilateral agreement.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell said the bloc had put the situation in Gaza at the top of its agenda, on the same day that an Israeli attack on a “safe zone” in Rafah led to the deaths of civilians and generated new international criticism about how the conflict is conducted.
In turn, Netanyahu stated that the civilian deaths in Rafah were the result of a “tragic accident”, amid operations that eliminated two high-ranking members of Hamas who were among the displaced population.
The UN special coordinator for the peace process in the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, called on Israeli authorities to carry out a “complete and transparent investigation” into the attack.
Last Friday (24), the International Court of Justice demanded that Israel “immediately halt” its military offensive in Rafah and ordered it to “guarantee unimpeded access” to any mission seeking to investigate accusations against Israeli authorities of genocide in the Strip. of Gaza.
