The high level of tax waivers in the federal government’s accounts caught the attention of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was “poorly impressed” with the numbers and demonstrated “very great concern” with the issue at a meeting at the Palácio do Planalto, they said. this Monday, the Ministers of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and Planning, Simone Tebet.
In a press interview after a meeting with Lula to analyze the government’s accounts and prepare the preparation of the 2025 Budget, Tebet stated that the president gave economic ministers time to look into the numbers and present solutions.

She cited as an example of concern the increase in Social Security spending, which is related to the increase in tax exemptions.
“There are two major concerns, the growth in Social Security spending and tax waivers. And the increase in Social Security spending is also related to the increase in tax exemptions”, said Tebet. “These numbers were presented to the president, he was extremely unimpressed with the increase in subsidies,” he added.
Haddad highlighted that the tax burden fell last year and that the government made a recovery to try to rebalance the accounts.
“Two topics caught the president’s attention. In terms of revenue, there is a great concern with tax exemptions”, said the minister.
“And also an explanation given to him about the fall in the tax burden last year, it fell by more than 0.6% of GDP, which was considered by the president to be quite significant.”
After the approval of a series of initiatives to increase revenue, the economic team has been pressured to present measures to reevaluate expenses.
