Hunting Wolf stock hunting will begin early next year

The quota is 20 wolves outside the reindeer herding area.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has adopted a regulation allowing wolf stock hunting from the beginning of next year.

The quota is 20 wolves outside the reindeer herding area. Exceptions to stock hunting are granted by the Finnish Game Center.

The hunt can be targeted at up to four flocks or pairs marking the territory.

The quota does not apply to wolves killed by police order or to damage and safety exemptions granted by the Game Center.

The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation considers the decision to allow wolf hunting premature and illegal. According to the EU Habitats Directive, the wolf is a strictly protected species outside the reindeer husbandry area in Finland. The union fears the wolf population will collapse as a result of the regulation.

According to the ministry, the protection can be waived if a clear goal is set for hunting and it is shown that there is no other satisfactory solution.
