One of the large cement plants in the Valencian Communitywhich the Swiss group Holcim owns in Saguntowants to massively reduce its CO2 emissions through a project carbon capture innovative in which count as an ally with another plant located in the same region, the Saggas regasification plant which is controlled by Enagas.
The plan contemplates developing in the Holcim factory in Sagunto a CO2 capture plant, that will be transferred through Enagás transport infrastructures to Saggas terminallocated in the nearby port of Sagunto. In its facilities it will be carried out a liquefaction process similar to that carried out with natural gas.
Once in a liquid state, the CO2 would be temporarily stored in the facility until be shipped for transportation on shipswhich would transport them for their “definitive geological storage”, that is, their transfer to large underground deposits.
With the baptized as ‘CO2necta project‘, whose investment has not been revealed and which is pending obtaining European funds, The aim is to avoid the emission of more than 560,000 tons of CO2 per year of one of the industries with the highest volume of greenhouse gases.
CO2 percentage
According to the latest official verification data of these emissions by industries required to be registered by the Generalitat, It would represent more than 40% of the volume released into the atmosphere by all cement companies located in the Valencian Community, which reached 1.38 million tons in 2023 and accounted for 21% of the emissions of the large regional industry.
In addition, it will allow the creation of a comprehensive value chain for capture, transportation and storage in the Valencian municipality of Sagunto and the Valencian Community.
This Thursday, the CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, met in Sagunto; the CEO of Holcim Spain, Ricardo de Pablos; and the general director of Saggas, Santiago Álvarez, to address the project.
The consortium formed by Enagás, Holcim and Saggas, is based on the establishment of a pioneering circular economy model, since within this process the “biogenic portion”, A part of the captured CO2 can be used for the production of e-methanol and other biofuels..
The CEO of Holcim Spain, Ricardo de Pablos, has highlighted that “industrial decarbonization requires cross-sector alliances and projects that allow the development of the CO2 value chain, with transport infrastructure and logistics hubs to promote economies of scale, making the transformation of the industry possible”.
Precisely the environmental limitations in Europe and the carbon reduction objectives are one of the main difficulties faced by the cement industry to continue producing in plants like the one in Saguntoin the face of competition from producers located in countries without these limitations.
During the visit, the CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo and Ricardo de Pablos toured the Saggas terminal, 72.5% owned by Enagás, and the Holcim factory in Sagunto.
