The last Belgian Grand Prix generated a mix of sensations at home Mercedes, expected in Spa-Francorchamps as one of the teams to be followed with more attention after the progress of the previous race weekend at the Hungaroring. At the end of qualifying, however, the performance of the W13 pushed Russell and Hamilton to the edge of the top-10 – then back on the grid due to the numerous penalties – leaving little hope for the race.
In the latter, however, the pace of the Mercedes improved over the course of the 44 laps, which ended with the 4th place of George Russell and the retirement of Lewis Hamiltoncame into contact with Fernando Alonso a Les Combes. Now that F1 is preparing to hit the track in Zandvoort for the Dutch GPthe seven-time English world champion remarked on his disappointment for the rhythm problems encountered in qualifying, as well as for the outcome of a race which, according to the number 44, could have ended with a much more positive result: “George did a great job in the last GP, as he did the rest of the year – commented a formula1.com – we were surprised because we were closer to our opponents than expected, and I think I could have finished 2nd, if only I had finished it. However, we still don’t have the right pace on the flying lap; it is something we will work on, but the pace is still a fundamental aspect, and we will continue to focus without the risk of losing our potential. In short, we need to improve the flying lap ”.
Limited to the Dutch GP, Hamilton however underlined what will be the most important and difficult challenge to face: “Last weekend didn’t go well compared to the confidence built up in the previous five races – he added – we took 2 steps forward and 5 steps backeven if some reasons were related to the characteristics of Spa. Now we hope to do better here, even if it will be difficult to beat the Red Bulls; we will have to take advantage of all the opportunities that arise “.
