The US elections are a long and complex process which begins in the spring of the previous year, when presidential hopefuls officially register their candidacy with the Federal Electoral Commission (FEC).
These elections are governed by an indirect suffrage system, so the final result does not depend directly on the citizens. Instead, the popular vote appoints electors or delegates who make up the Electoral College, a body made up of 538 representatives who will decide the next president based on the results of each of the 50 states.
To be declared the winner, a candidate needs the endorsement of at least 270 of them.
The distribution of delegates is based on the representation that each state has in Congress, which means that a territory has as many delegates as senators and representatives it has assigned according to its population.
For example, Californiathe most populous state, has 55while less populated states, such as Wyoming, have a minimum of three.
