Baerbock or Habeck is the question asked by the Greens. The answer to this could lie in a member survey – but there are doubts within the party.
Berlin – With Annalena Baerbock as candidate for chancellor, the Greens achieved their best result to date in a federal election in 2021. Who will be running as the party’s candidate for chancellor in the upcoming 2025 election? Both Foreign Minister Baerbock and Economics Minister Robert Habeck are said to have ambitions on the K issue. A member survey would be an option to make the decision – but according to internal sources, the party wants to avoid that.
Chancellor question from the Greens: Baerbock or Habeck?
Vice Chancellor Habeck was left behind in the last election and gave Baerbock the lead in the candidacy for chancellor. The two Green top candidates decided among themselves who should run. This time it could be different. “If there is more than one applicant for the candidacy for chancellor, we will hold a primary election,” announced co-chair Ricarda Lang in January. If neither Baerbock nor Habeck throw in the towel, that would trigger a member survey.
Like that Editorial Network Germany (RND) As we have learned from leading circles of the party and the parliamentary group, there is said to be internal concern about “crazy self-employment” with a view to such a vote. There is also a fear that “we will disintegrate,” quoted RND Voices from the party. Apart from that, a member survey is also simply expensive: the costs are several hundred thousand euros, for example for election campaign events in the run-up to the survey, it was said.
Candidate for chancellor wanted: Habeck receives support from within the party
But who is the Greens’ preferred candidate? Prominent advocates have already spoken on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. “I would welcome it if Robert Habeck became the top candidate,” said Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann in an interview published on Thursday Mirror. Kretschmann praised the economics minister as “a talented and energetic politician, someone who learns.” Baerbock had her chance in 2021 and “Robert’s turn is now,” said Habeck’s internal party supporters RND. The Minister of Economic Affairs himself is said to be of the opinion that it is his turn Picture on Sunday citing unnamed party insiders reported.
According to a current survey, Habeck is slightly ahead in terms of popularity, at least among the population. In the list of the ten most important politicians, the Vice Chancellor is with a rating of minus 0.4 (4th place), ahead of Foreign Minister Baerbock with 0.6 (6th place). The surveyed in the ZDF-“Political barometer” can assign values from plus five to minus five. However, surveys are always snapshots. While the K question continues to concern the Greens, the SPD candidate has already been determined: incumbent Olaf Scholz should run again in 2025. The Chancellor had recently even decided on his preferred opponent in the Union.
