Constantine II remained the last king of Greece. He served as king from March 1964 to June 1973, when a military junta dissolved the monarchy and declared Greece a republic.
King Constantine II was born in Athens in June 1940 of Paul I and the queen Friederike’s as a second child. Konstantin’s older sister Sofia was Queen of Spain from 1975 until 2014, when her son of Felipe VI became king of Spain. Konstantin’s younger sister is the princess of Greece and Denmark Irene.
After his father’s death in 1964, Konstantin became king in his early twenties. Described as a reformist, the king often clashed with the country’s prime ministers and, among other things, appointed governments, albeit short-lived, without elections.
In 1967, a military coup took place in Greece, in the aftermath of which Konstantin fled with his family to Rome. Finally, in 1973, the junta ended the monarchy, and in December, the republic was confirmed by a referendum.
Konstantin had time to live in the world for decades, until ten years ago he returned to Greece with his wife, the former queen of Greece Anne-Marie’s with. Anne-Marie is the Queen of Denmark of Margaret II sister.
