Mattarella at the Sapienza University of Rome: “Gaza, all violations of human rights are to be condemned”
“A letter that was published urged me not to lock myself in what was defined as the ivory tower of the rectorate and upon entering a sign asked me what I think of what is happening in Gaza: I don’t want to leave this question unanswered.” He said it Sergio Mattarella speaking at a ceremony at Sapienza.
“I said what I think about what is happening in Gaza publicly and not in casual or informal circumstances but on significant occasions such as the intervention I made at the UN General Assembly or in the letter sent to the President of the Israeli Republic, also reiterating the request for an immediate ceasefire”.
“For our Republic all human rights violations they must be denounced and opposed. All. Everywhere, always. Because human dignity, the demand for freedom, the condemnation of oppression, the rejection of brutal violence do not change value depending on the territory, depending on the borders of the States or on the international relations between political parties. This awareness is strongly felt in universities and in those who attend them because university they are the seat of free debate, of freedom of criticism, sometimes even of dissent from power, always connected across state borders. Freedom, peace, human rights pass through dialogue, discussion, the free movement of work, against violence and against hatred which, when spreading, produces horrifying results, as happened yesterday in Slovakia“, he said Mattarella.
“Everything that concerns the dignity of people, of every person, their freedom, the need to respect their humanitarian rights is indicated in our Constitution and is a duty of the Italian Republic. This applies to all civil populations, children and elderly, for the Palestinian people, for the boys and girls killed and raped while listening to music at a rave on October 7 in Israelit’s worth thinking about the children slaughtered that day, it’s worth thinking about the rapper sentenced to hanging in Iran, it’s worth thinking about Masha Amini and for many Iranian girls imprisoned, tortured and often killed for refusing to wear the veil or because they did not wear it well, it applies to girls who are forbidden to attend schools and universities in Afghanistan“, Mattarella listed.
“The power, the worst one, wants them university of their own country are isolated, without relationships or collaboration with the universities of other countries because this condition allows the worst of powers to control universities, to compress culture and to impede its push for freedom”.
“I reiterate the hope for dialogue in mutual respect, with particular attention to everything that concerns the effectiveness of the right to studywithout anyone believing they can demand to impose evaluations or decisions, but respecting the opinions of others because in this respect lies freedom”, he added.
