Starting next May 11, Mexico and China Direct flights between both countries will officially resume. This was announced by Chinese ambassador Zhang Run, who shared the good news on his social networks.
“I would like to announce good news to Mexican friends: Thanks to the efforts of both parties, the direct flight between China and Mexico has officially resumed. Starting May 11, China Southern Airlines will inaugurate the Shenzhen-Mexico City flight! “Mexico-Tijuana-Shenzhen!” said the diplomat.
As of March 2023, it had been announced that by April 17 of that year, China's largest airline, China Southern Airlines, was ready to establish its first non-stop service in Mexico.
At that time, it was indicated that China Southern would operate this flight twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays) with a Boeing 787-9 or an Airbus A350, however, on that date it could not be finalized.
Direct flights: China Southern Airlines returns to Mexico
With a distance of 14,147 kilometers, the route would exceed the 12,878 kilometers that the connection between Canton (southeast China) and New York (United States) covers, making it the seventh longest in the world.
The route will fly directly to Mexico City from Shenzhen; However, the return trip will make a small stopover of about 30 minutes in Tijuana.
The flight across the Pacific Ocean will have a total duration of more than 16 hours, according to the flight table shown by the regional news portal GD Today.
China will reconnect with Mexico
In 2022, the Mexican Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, stated that starting the following year, Aeroméxico would resume connections with China, although so far that route has not been finalized.
Since the start of the pandemic, there have been no direct flights between both countries. This is due in part to Mexico City's altitude, which is 7,300 feet above sea level.
This means that fully loaded planes cannot extract as much power from the engines to take off on long-haul flights. In addition, there are tense political and commercial relations between China and the United States.
Before the pandemic, three airlines offered eight round trips a week between China and Mexico: Aeroméxico, Hainan Airlines Holding and China Southern, which flew between Guangzhou and Mexico City with a stopover in Vancouver.
