An avalanche in the French Alps killed four Norwegian skiers who were dragged by a snow and ice torrent off the southeast region of Savoy.
Also on Wednesday, another avalanche near Chamonix, in the region of High Savoy, killed a Swiss skier, according to the Bonneville Prosecutor’s Office. The Norwegian victims were part of a group of seven skiers trapped in the avalanche in Val-Cenis, on the border with Italy.
Three people died at the scene and another, a woman, died after being transferred to the Grenoble Hospital with severe cardiorespiratory arrest and severe hypothermia, according to an official of the prefecture of Savoy. The other three people were unharmed.
All of them were equipped with antialud beacons since they practiced cross-track crossing, said the mayor of Val-Cenis, Jacques Arnoux. “It was a large avalanche that was triggered outside the skiable domain,” he added. A team of 10 high mountain rescue specialists was added to the operation, according to a police source.
The victim of Wednesday’s avalanche in Alta Savoy was a 30 -year -old woman who skied off the north face of the Aigillette des Posttes in the Mont Blanc massif, according to Bonneville’s office. He was with his father, who was unharmed, and his brother, who was transferred to the hospital to perform exams. The three were equipped with transceptions and antiavalanchas airbags, the Prosecutor’s Office added.
