Nearby residents affected by the Meira fire are trying to remove the smell of smoke from their homes by frying hams and burning scented candles.
Multi A Helsinki resident living near the Meira factory had to spend last night in a smoky apartment, where it still smells.
Tiina Karvinen lives one hundred meters from the fire site. He hadn’t followed the news during the day and only realized during the afternoon dog run of the street closing that something exceptional was going on. During the run, the stairwell was filled with such a bad smell that Karvinen was horrified.
“I was that helpful with what this is. And to my horror, I noticed that the same, really bad-smelling, bitter smell had broken into my apartment during the run. ”
Karvinen found out from HS’s news that the neighborhood is on fire and that the windows must not be kept open.
“It smelled awful in my apartment all night, and the smell is still not completely gone,” says Karvinen.
Luck the accident is that Karvinen has not yet had time to do the Christmas cleaning. He hopes a thorough cleanup on Wednesday and Thursday will remove the bad smell. If this is not the case, Karvinen has another trump card at his disposal.
“I thought I’d dig vanilla-scented candles out of the closet. Even if they took away the rest of the disgusting smells. ”
Aleksis Kiven living on the street Kari Kallio heard of the fire at work for half a day and hurried home to patch up the ventilation.
“At one time, there was quite a bit of smoke on the street, and there was a clear smell of smoke in the apartment. I don’t know if the ventilation of the house was closed, at least the valves got quite a lot of outdoor air inside. ”

Kallio returned to work and tried to return home after six, but was no longer successful.
“I tried to drive the car to the parking garage. Police blocked everything from passing through the corner of the building, by car and on foot, and said the area had been evacuated, ”he says.
Kallio tried to explain that his residential house is not next to the Meira building, but there is an empty and another house in between.
“Police politely said they were just following the instructions. He urged me to spend some time somewhere else. I asked because I could go back, but he didn’t know and couldn’t tell who would know. I couldn’t get any supplies, clothes or a toothbrush with me. ”
Rock did not find any information on the website of the housing association or landlord when he would return to his home, nor did the news mention anything about the evacuation of residents in the area.
“Luckily I got to an acquaintance for the evening, and eventually I punched myself in the night village as well.”
When Kallio returned home on Tuesday morning, he noticed that the smoke was still smelling in the apartment and especially in the stairwell.
“The windows of our house have just been remodeled and the new white frames show soot dust. The door from the balcony to the sauna was not yet closed after the recent installation, and therefore the sauna has now become a smoke sauna. ”
Kallio decided to stay telecommuting in the morning to ventilate the apartment. He hopes to banish the rest of the smells by frying the ham.
“Maybe we should fry two hams too. In addition, the sauna heater will probably have to fry sausages. So far, better scents have come from Meira. ”
