The Narva River runs along the border between Estonia and Russia. News office BNS and Estonian public radio ERR reported on Thursday that the Russian border guard would have gone to pick up a total of 24 buoys marking the fairways.
“The case is part of Russia’s wider provocation and hybrid influence, as well as the country’s intentions to move Russia’s sea border in the Baltic Sea“, said the head of the EU’s foreign relations Josep Borrell in a statement released on Friday.
“Such actions cannot be accepted. The EU expects Russia to both explain why it removed the buoys and to immediately return the buoys back to their places,” he continued.
A lane significant buoys have been placed in the Narva River for decades to prevent navigation errors and accidental entry into Russian waters.
Over the past year, Russia has disagreed with Estonia on about half of the placement locations of the buoys.
Prime Minister of Estonia Kaja Kallas stated on Thursday that the removal of the buoys is a border incident. At the same time, he emphasized that Estonia takes a firm and moderate approach to the case.
“We see in Russia’s actions a model by which it tries to sow unrest,” Kallas said.
