For some time now, Italy has been pushing within the European institutions to ask for move up from the end of 2026 to the beginning of 2025 the review clause provided for in the regulation on light vehicles, the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso also reiterated this when speaking to the unions. But to date it is difficult to think that this anticipation could materialize, especially after the latest rumors that have come out of the EU itself.
The EU Commission responds to Urso
“The review of EU rules that set a halt to the production of diesel and petrol cars in 2035, set for 2026, for now it is appropriate – commented a spokesperson for the EU Commission – The path to 2035 must be gradualalso because there is a lot of work underway to create the right conditions for the transition”.
The Italian proposal
The Italian government continues to hope, however, as underlined again by Minister Urso: “The Italian proposal to bring forward to the beginning of 2025 the revision of the European regulation on light vehicles that provides for the sale of only electric cars from 2035 is gaining more and more consensus. Businesses and consumers cannot be left in absolute uncertainty on what decisions we will take anyway at the end of 2026. Another two years of uncertainty would lead to the collapse of the automotive industry in Europe, so anticipating is common sense”.
The next steps
The minister himself announced that in the next few days, probably tomorrow, the Italian plan will be illustrated Brusselsfirst of all to all Italian MEPs, then on the occasion of the meeting on the automotive sector promoted by the Hungarian presidency. On 26 September, instead, it will be the turn of the competitiveness council: the objective, according to Urso, is “allow our businesses and obviously our citizens to choose more consciously“.
