Positively atypical Friday for George Russell in that of Mexico Citywhere the English of the Mercedes participated in only one free practice session. While in PL1 the Anglo-German team took to the track with Lewis Hamilton and Nyck De Vries, called up to take part in this session in place of Russell (finished in 18th place), the latter returned to the wheel of his car in the subsequent test, which is, moreover, intended for carrying out the Pirelli tests.
However, with only half an hour spent riding on this year’s tires, the period of time was still enough for the Brit to make the best time in 1: 19.870distancing Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri by eight tenths (also present on the track only in PL2 after giving way to Liam Lawson).
A very satisfying day therefore for the number 63, who underlines the developments and progress of the Mercedes W13 in this last part of the championship: “It was one of ours Friday better, if not best of the year so far – commented – the car runs well and it was nice to drive on this track. The pace was relatively high, but we know the difficulties of this circuit. For qualifying, the difficulty will be getting the tires in the right window for the single lap, and on Sunday it will be difficult to manage the engine and brake temperatures. Hopefully, the podium should be possible for us this weekend, so that’s what we’re aiming for. The absence of the normal PL2, which allow us to evaluate the performance of our opponents in the long term, does not allow us to understand where our opponents are and this can become a great challenge if we have problems with tire temperatures during the competition. We have learned some very useful lessons on tire temperature management for the next year and we will work hard overnight, because it will certainly not be an easy weekend, but we have learned something positive“.
