It is not yet peacetime for the Valkyrie, and it’s not just a play on words. The special car of Aston Martin, a $ 3.2 million-per-vehicle hypercar, has not yet embarked on a stable production path, with several problems occurring throughout its gestation from design to sales.
Aston Martin has changed ownership, and is now under control of Lawrence Stroll. He made his debut in Formula 1, moreover worsening his results compared to 2020 (when it was called Racing Point). And it’s trying to get back on top, financially. But the complexity of the Valkyrie isn’t helping: only one has been built so far (last November). The others were ‘blocked’ by an electronics problem. This is not a good sign, considering that significant revenues are expected from this model.
According to Automotive News reports, the car’s central software is really complicated to implement, and the risk of failure is high. So Aston Martin prefers to wait and fine-tune everything rather than taking rash steps. A spokesman for the British company confirmed that no Valkyrie had been delivered to wealthy clients. The shakedown of the first car has been completed, and only the documentation is missing to be able to officially say that it left the factory permanently.
CEO Tobias Moers has said in the past that the Valkyrie is the most complicated car he has managed in his career. Even by assembly, it looks more like a Formula 1 than a ‘road’ model, although it is possible to drive it mainly on the track. All 150 coupe versions of the model have been ordered, and now an additional 85 open-top spider versions remain to be assigned, according to Aston Martin. So 234 are missing, and at this pace it will take a long time to deliver them all. By solving the electronics problems, however, we hope to speed up this troubled production.
