1930 steam locomotive arrives in Mexico from Canada: What is it like?

Hundreds of Mexicans are already preparing to enjoy the spectacle that will be seeing the former steam locomotive Empress 2816 circulate on the roads of the country. The old machine left Canada on April 24 and is expected to arrive in Mexico City on June 6.

He unprecedented journey of the Empress 2816 steam locomotive has caused international excitementand dozens of nationals and foreigners have already prepared tours to enjoy the artifact in circulation or at the 10 official stops that the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway company has established.

Under the name of Final Spike Anniversary Steam Tourthis tour seeks to celebrate the union between the three North American countries and highlight the historical importance of CPKC in the development of rail transport in the region. The Empress 2816 locomotive has become the symbol of this initiative, carrying with it years of legacy and tradition.

The majestic Empress 2816: a historical jewel in motion

Built in December 1930 by Montreal Locomotive Worksthe Empress 2816 is a Hudson 4-6-4 type steam locomotive that impresses with its imposing presence.

With almost 28 meters long and 4.6 meters high, This majestic machine served for decades transporting cargo in Canada before its retirement in 1960.. Afterwards, she functioned as an “ambassador” for CP, appearing at special events in the country of the maple leaf and the United States until 2012.

After a meticulous restoration, it is now back on the rails as an ambassador of CPKC’s history, and as a tourist attraction for thousands of people internationally.

The Empress 2816 tour began in Calgary on April 24 and includes 10 strategic stops throughout his journey through North America. From Moose Jaw to Mexico City, this journey offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with this railroad relic and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of CPKC.

Although the Empress 2816 trip does not allow passengers on board, the 10 scheduled stops offer the opportunity to participate in public events where attendees can admire the locomotive, learn about the history of CPKC and experience the charm of the Puffer Belly Express, a version miniature of the Empress 2816.

According to the official CPKC website, the Empress 2816 journey will take 42 days in total. It is expected that The locomotive arrives in Laredo, Texas, on May 28, and then continues its journey to Mexicoarriving in Monterrey on May 31 and ending its journey in Mexico City on June 4.

In addition, the Empress 2816 is expected to visit other Mexican cities, such as Ramos Arizpe, Saltillo, Real de Catorce, San Juan del Río, Querétaro, Tula de Allende, Cuautitlán Izcalli and Tlalnepantla, thus expanding its cultural impact in the country.
