Some write the number one with a pin, others without. According to the director of elections, both methods work, as long as you can find out the number.
Presently in the second round of the ongoing presidential election, a concern has arisen among some voters: can the number one be misspelled?
Number one is needed by the greens Pekka Haaviston in the number which is the number 10. of the Coalition by Alexander Stubb candidate number is 8.
In the models, it is instructed to write the number one as a simple vertical line, without a barb.
However, many people are used to writing a barb in their numbers. For example, school children of the 21st century were taught to press until 2016 to write a barb in their numbers.
What if one goes to make his own ticket. Discard the vote?
Director of Elections Arto Jääskeläinen reassures: not one barb will topple the world.
“You don't reject a voice if it looks like the number one,” he says. “The tellers are looking to see if there is a number one or something else. Väkänen does not make that number invalid.”
According to Jääskeläinen, it is even quite understandable if the pin in the ticket gets lost.
“Ikkönen's barb is almost everywhere. Even if done by machine, the barb comes out on top.”
Jääskeläinen reminds that the model numbers can be seen on the voting notices and voting booths that came home. When you take a sample from them, the number will be spelled correctly for sure.
Previously drawing the first place in the elections was not much of a problem, but as the 21st century progressed, the subject has been covered up every now and then. The biggest debate has been caused by the possible confusion of a barbed number one and an uncrossed stoppage.
In 2011, a legislative initiative was even made in the Parliament, which proposed to completely remove the number seven from the candidate numbers.
In the second round of the presidential election in 2024, there is no need to think about the intermingling of the tie and the number one, and according to Arto Jääskeläinen, there were no problems with these in the first round either.
“We have not been given any information about the electoral district committees that there were any particularly many problems with them. When you take into account that rejected ballots were a total of 0.3 percent of all votes, they hardly fit in.”
Bridge in the round, the number eight is also drawn on the tickets. There are significantly fewer problems in making this number than with number one – but yes, you can make mistakes in that too.
For example, there are people who draw two balls on top of each other. What if, for example, there is a gap between the balls?
Jääskälä makes people laugh.
“I have never heard that kasia could be written like that. It sounds like a very special way.”
“If a voter uses this method, I cannot recommend it to anyone! I could imagine that the election commissions will have to think carefully about whether it's kasi or something else.”
If the vote count determines that the ticket has two balls or two zeros on top of each other, and it cannot be counted in any way, the vote is rejected.
However, according to Jääskeläinen, the instructions are clear even for drawing, so it is worth taking the model in this case as well.
How about if, despite good instructions, it still goes and shines in the booth. Can the number be crossed out and a new, better one written next to it?
It is possible, says Jääskeläinen.
“It has happened that you write the wrong number. Then you can cross out the wrong one and write the right one next to it. Yes, these have been approved, these are solutions of administrative rights. If the repair is neatly done and the correct number is visible, then the ticket has been accepted.”
Still, Arto Jääskeläinen emphasizes that the voter takes the risk himself. This course of action is not their guideline to follow.
In case of problems, according to Jääskeläinen, the best way is to go to the election official and get a new ballot. The old one is torn down and destroyed. The number is neatly written on the new ticket.
