The daughter of Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin, considered the mentor of Vladimir Putin, died on Saturday night (20), after an explosion in the car she was driving, on the outskirts of Moscow. Darya Dugina was 30 years old, a journalist and political expert. Russia is investigating the murder hypothesis, while Ukraine denies any involvement in an alleged attack.
According to Russian state newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta, father and daughter were attending a festival together near Moscow, and Dugin decided at the last minute to switch cars. According to Russian state news agency TASS, the Toyota Land Cruiser Darya was driving at the time of the explosion belonged to her father, and he was likely the intended target. One video on social media shows the Russian ideologue with his hands on his head, while visiting the site of the explosion.
“An explosive device was placed under the car on the driver’s side,” the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement reproduced by the Reuters news agency. “The investigation believes the crime was planned in advance and was contractual in nature.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Ukraine’s involvement in the attack would amount to a policy of “state terrorism”.
Ukraine’s presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak denied on Sunday that Kiev was involved in the incident. “I emphasize that Ukraine has nothing to do with this, because we are not a criminal state like the Russian Federation and we are not a terrorist state,” he said. He said that Russia began to “disintegrate internally” and that various political groups began to clash in the struggle for power.
For two decades, Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin has publicly advocated that Russia invade Ukraine. Darya Dugina largely agreed with her father’s ideas, having even gone on state TV to offer support for Russian actions in Ukraine.
In March, Dugina was placed on a US sanctions list. Editor-in-chief of the website United World International, according to the US Treasury, she suggested that Ukraine would “perish” if admitted to the NATO military alliance.
