In Italy, 18,255 new cases of Covid were reported in the first week of August, an increase of approximately 7% compared to the 17,006 of the previous week. This is what emerges from the monitoring of the Ministry of Health-Istituto Superiore di Sanità control room.
The most affected regions
At the regional level, Liguria stands out with a boom in incidence (+177%), while Campania remains first in absolute number of new cases (3,155), followed by Lombardy (2,780) and Lazio (2,332) where the incidence is slightly decreasing. A minus sign also in front of the incidence of Marche, Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta.
The impact on hospitals
In Italy, Covid cases stabilize after the increase recorded in July. In the first week of August, “the incidence of diagnosed and reported cases is equal to 31 per 100 thousand inhabitants, substantially stable compared to the previous week (29 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants); the highest incidence was reported in the Liguria region (86 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants) and the lowest in the Marche (0.5 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. The transmissibility index (Rt) calculated with data updated to 7 August and based on cases with hospitalization is equal to 1.11 (1.04-1.19), substantially stable compared to the previous week (Rt 1.19)”. On the hospital front, “the occupancy of beds in the medical area is equal to 3.3%, substantially stable compared to the previous week (3% as of July 31). The occupancy of beds in intensive care is stable, equal to 0.6%, compared to the previous week (0.6% as of July 31),” the monitoring highlights.
On the variants front, “preliminary data relating to the month of July (to August 4) highlight the co-circulation of different sub-variants of JN.1 under international scrutiny. Among these, the proportion of sequencing attributable to KP.3.1.1, subject to international monitoring (Vum), is growing”, the experts highlight.
