The marketing and their messages suggest behaviors that imply benefits; The truth is that this is not always the case.
But there are others advertisementsdevoid of the strength of advertisingwhich they do have word honorary. We confirmed this, upon perceiving the humors of the earth, a group of neighbors, domestic workers and gardeners from Gardens in the Mountaina colony south of the Mexico City. We didn't like the first thing we heard: erosion, loss of biodiversity, of organic matter… Thus began this story that is enriching our soils.
The idea came from Mónica Ornelas, a member of the colony's Ecology Committee. She was clear about her objectives: a community composta greenhouse and a nursery. Ana Cantón and Silvia Chacón soon fell in love with the proposal and the rest of us were infected. But before we get to work we continue listening. The words that convinced us were those of Orlando, an agroecologist farmer who lives in Pipioltepec, State of Mexico, who generously shared with us his methods for making organic compost and controlled.
On March 9, 2022 The trip to Nature, a forest natural oak tree located inside the colony, which already looked recovered by a history that included cleaning days, removal of exotic species, reforestation, etc., gave up a piece of its five hectares to make community compost.
Since then, every Monday a mound of alternating layers of soil, leaf litter, pruning, eggshells, ash, coffee and organic matter (raw fruit and vegetables) is erected.
When the colorful cake reaches one meter high, the hands of Mónica, Ana, Raúl, Silvia, Maritxu, Herminia, Gera, Úrsula, Francisco, Marcela, Martha and Korina cover it with black plastic. It sounds like a coven, but it is a spell of life that becomes earth, because instead of taking brooms and flying, we measure the temperature, PH and humidity by extending our noses to catch the smell.
So, after four months, we save the compost in black bags and sing like Violeta Parra:
“And it is sprouting, sprouting
Like the little moss on the stone
Like the little moss on the stone, oh yes yes yes…”
The truth is that producing compost (a product obtained from materials of organic origin, which are subjected to a controlled biological decomposition process) is a conscious act because it returns to the earth the nutrients it gave us. While we do so we contribute to the cycle of life and our own because the social fabric of the community is reestablished. The network of Mycelium hidden under the earth, through which the oaks that observe us communicate, seems to emerge before us, binding us with ties of friendship and solidarity with men and with nature. And in case you don't believe it, I'll end with the hard data and others that are not so hard: to date, 12 mounds have been built that have produced 2,862 kg of compost in Gardens on the Mountain and the bonds of affection and empathy have been reproduced. to such a degree that we have not yet been able to measure them.
