The tribute was proposed by senator Marcos Pontes (PL-SP); The idea is to recognize the merit of the athlete who became one of the biggest sporting icons in the country
A Sports Commission of Senate approved on Tuesday (May 21, 2024) a project that includes the name of Ayrton Senna da Silvaformer Formula 1 driver, in Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland. The tribute proposed by the senator Marcos Pontes (PL-SP) intends to recognize the merit of the athlete who became one of Brazil’s greatest sporting icons. If there is no request for a plenary vote, the proposal will go directly to the Chamber.
The senator’s opinion Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) was in favor of the PL 789 of 2024.
“Senna, throughout his career, stood out for his undisputed talent and his achievements in motorsport, including 3 world championships, in addition to his unique ability to unite Brazil. In a country marked by intense social and economic divisions, Senna was a source of pride and unity. His victories were celebrated as national achievements and his determination to overcome obstacles inspired people from all walks of life to pursue their own dreams with equal passion and dedication.” declared Kajuru in his opinion.
The senator also said that “the project celebrates a figure who exemplified the spirit of struggle and perseverance, someone whose life and work continue to motivate generations to seek excellence, overcome adversity and contribute positively to society”.
Kajuru recalled Senna’s legacy in philanthropy. According to the congressman, after the athlete’s death, the Ayrton Senna Institute started to play an increasingly important role in promoting education and combating social inequality across the country, transforming the lives of millions of children and young people.
“A fair and appropriate tribute, which recognizes his exceptional achievements as an athlete, commitment to altruistic values and his role as a source of continued inspiration for Brazil”said Kajuru when declaring his vote to approve the project.
The driver died on May 1, 1994, when the car he was driving collided with a concrete barrier, during the San Marino Grand Prix, at the Autódromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, in Imola, Italy.
