A new cold record has been set in Maastricht. It has never been as cold anywhere in the Netherlands on April 1 as today: 1.8 degrees.
And so a quick and abrupt end to the exceptional month of March, with a record amount of sun and real spring temperatures on many days, Weerplaza reports. The low temperatures are now caused by very cold air from the Arctic. Today and yesterday it resulted in snow all over the country. Today it became 5 to 7 degrees on the coast and 3 to 5 degrees inland. So it remained even colder in South Limburg.
The 1.8 degrees in Maastricht is the coldest temperature in the Netherlands ever measured on April 1. It has not been this cold since the start of the measurements. The previous cold record was 2.5 degrees in 1963 in Eelde in Drenthe.
44 heat records
Weerplaza states that in a stable climate, about as many heat records as cold records are usually broken, because the average temperature of the climate does not change. In recent decades, however, the average temperature in our country has risen rapidly, resulting in heat records more often than cold records.
Today’s record follows after 44 heat records. The last cold record was on September 23, 2018, when it did not get warmer than 10.8 degrees in Deelen (Gelderland).

Not rare
Winter weather in April is not that rare, the weather bureau reports. ‘Certainly in the last century it was quite common for snow to fall in our country almost every year in April.’ Cold air is always around in Europe in April. Although winter conditions have become less common in April due to global warming in the last few decades, summer weather is still rarer.
