The new product has been created in collaboration with IMIDA
A group of farmers from Cieza, in coordination with IMIDA, has launched an initiative to market a new kind of apricot with which it is intended to gain competitiveness in the markets. It is a red-colored mid-season product that has been obtained after grafting on nine-year-old Paraguayan trees, as explained by Santiago Martínez Gabaldón, president of Fecoam, who together with the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Luengo, visited this Tuesday the experimental farm where this plantation has begun. It is an approximate space of half a hectare located in the Fuente del Peral area.
The new apricot has a smooth skin and is very sweet, although it remains to be seen what its behavior would be in the face of adverse weather conditions such as a hailstorm or excess humidity, which generally tends to open the product. “We still don’t know how long it can withstand bad weather, which is another aspect to take into account,” said Gabaldón. “What we do know is that Europeans love this red-colored fruit, and not the yellow-skinned ones, which they don’t eat,” he said.
For his part, the councilor praised “the excellence of Murcian products and the good work of farmers and IMIDA researchers, who day after day are experienced to get the best products in our fields,” said Antonio Luengo. The batch of apricots, which has already begun to be harvested, will be exported to European countries such as the Netherlands, Germany or Belgium.
