Halloween is always celebrated on October 31st. The celebration generates a certain controversy about its origin and whether Brazilians should celebrate the date or not.
The festival is quite popular in English-speaking countries such as the USA, Ireland or England and, according to studies, it began to take shape between the 1500s and 1800s. One of the oldest records of the festival is the poem “Halloween ”, by Scottish writer Robert Burns, which was written in 1786.

The date was chosen to celebrate the end of the harvest on the Celtic festival of Samhain. The bonfire also comes from this time, when it was used as the burning of tares and which symbolized the path to be followed by Christian souls in purgatory or to repel witchcraft.
In the United States, there is also the tradition of children going out in costumes on the streets, knocking on the houses in the neighborhood and saying the famous phrase: trick or treating.
For some decades now, Brazil has been slowly trying to absorb certain references from the celebration, which serves as an excuse to hold costume parties or marathon horror movies. Even so, there is still a lot of rejection of her.
To fight against the “witches” of the ephemeris, Brazil chose Saci Pererê. In 2003, deputy Aldo Rebelo presented a bill creating the Saci day, celebrated on the same date, to counterbalance the foreign festival and enhance national culture and folklore. In 2013 it was officially established in the country.
“Saci is recognized as a force of cultural resistance to the invasion of x-men, pokemons, rallies, and war games”, says an excerpt from Rebelo’s project.
No matter what you celebrate: this can be a date to get the family together and play with the kids. Instead of gathering around the campfire, how about decorating the house and making some pumpkin-based recipes? If you’re on Saci’s team, it can be a great opportunity to learn more about Brazilian folklore.
