The market of passenger cars in Europe suffered a setback in March, with a drop in registrations of 2.8% compared to March 2023 and a more significant contraction of 21.9% compared to March 2019, pre-pandemic. Although the recovery began in August 2022, the positive trend stopped last month. However, the first three months of 2024 have overall recorded a growth of 4.9% compared to the same period in 2023, but a significant drop of 18.1% compared to the pre-crisis period of 2019.

In March, the passenger car market in Western Europe recorded 1,383,410 registrationsdown 2.8% compared to March 2023. Instead, the first quarter maintained a positive trend with 3,395,049 units registeredmarking an increase of 4.9% compared to the same period in 2023.
Among the five major markets, the United Kingdom was the only one to grow (+10.4%), while France, Italy, Spain And Germany showed a decline in registrations of 1.5%, 3.7%, 4.7% and 6.2% respectively. Overall for the quarter, the United Kingdom recorded an increase of 10.4%, while Italy and France recorded a +5.7%. Italy, on the other hand, ranked fourth in terms of registration volumes in March, but remained in third place in the quarter.
Among the data released by Acea, particularly interesting are those concerning the sales of electric cars (BEV)who recorded a 11% drop compared to March 2023, with a total of 196,411 vehicles compared to 220,778 the previous year. This decrease was influenced by significant contractions in Germany (-28.9%) and in Italy (-34.4%).
The electric car market seems to be increasingly influenced by purchase incentiveswithout which they are not purchased by European motorists.

In Germanyregistrations in March were 263,844, down 6.2% from a year ago. The cumulative amount has reached 694,785 units, with an increase of 4.2%. BEVs fell 28.9% in March, reaching11.9% share, while PHEVs remained in line with last year at 6.1%, bringing ECVs to 18.0%. HEVs are growing at 25.4%.
In Francecar registrations in March were 180.023down 1.5% compared to March 2023, but the quarter maintained a positive trend with an increase of 5.7% thanks to 444,902 vehicles against 420,887 in the first quarter of 2023. BEVs recorded an increase of 10.9% in March, bringing their share to 19.0%, while PHEVs reached 9.0% with an increase of 3.6%, leading ECVs to grow by 8.5% and reach 28.0% share. HEVs are gone from 21.1% to 27.7% of representativeness in a year.
In the United Kingdomregistrations in March were 317,786, with an increase of 10.4% compared to the previous year. The cumulative counts 545,548 vehicles, with an increase of 10.4%. BEVs grew 3.8% in March, reaching 15.2% share, while PHEVs increased by 36.7% to 7.7% representativeness. ECVs overall gained 12.9% and 22.9% share. HEVs grew by 25.5%.
In Spainnew car registrations in March were 94,840, down 4.7% compared to the previous year. The quarter instead marked growth of 3.1%. 244,879 units. BEVs remained stable in share at 10.3%, while HEVs reached 35.7% share. ECVs overall saw growth of 5.0%, with BEVs up 7.7% and PHEVs up 5.5%.
Who sold the most in Europe
Stellantis has registered 228,740 cars registered, suffering a loss of 8.7%. Almost all brands showed contractions: Peugeot (-12.7%), Opel/Vauxhall (-10%), Citroën (-3%), Fiat (-8.3%), Lancia (-3.8%), Alfa Romeo (-11%), DS (-24.5%), Maserati, Dodge and Ram (-35.1%). The only growing brand was Jeepswith an increase of 7.2%.
For the group Volkswagenthe monthly registrations were 323,773 unitsa decrease of 6.6% compared to February 2023. Also decreasing Volkswagen (-6.8%)Audi (-20.3%), but Skoda (+1.9%), Cupra (+5.2%), and Porsche (+9.2%) are growing. BMW has registered 96,961 carssuffering a loss of 0.9%, while Mercedes-Benz recorded an increase of 2.8%, with 81,717 registrations.
The group Renault recorded growth of 2.7% with 123,603 registrationsdriven by Renault's 6.3% rise, but with Dacia down 2.2%. Ford showed a contraction of 21.7% with 48,161 registrations. Volvo (+32.5%) And Jaguar Land Rover (+13.6%) have grown by double digits, while Tesla suffered a contraction of 34.9% with 40,109 license plates.
Among the Asian manufacturers, the group Hyundai/Kia recorded a decline of 5.6% with 112,692 registrations, while Toyota had an increase of 10.9% with 102,400 license plates. Nissan rose by 19.3%, Honda by 64%, Suzuki by 19.9%, e Mitsubishi by 206.6%. Mazda suffered a loss of 14.5%, while Saic Motor recorded an increase of 8.5% with 25,992 registrations.
