Germany’s energy policy and the indecision of the German authorities in relations with Moscow have made the European Union hostage to Russia. This opinion was reached by British journalists in an article for the newspaper The Telegraph.
As the authors of the material note, Europe will not have enough gas, which will come through the resumed operation of the Nord Stream. At the same time, the EU has no alternative suppliers to replace Russian ones, the columnists added.
In addition to all this, Germany put pressure on Canada to return the turbine delayed due to sanctions to Gazprom, recalled in The Telegraph.
According to journalists, this concession in Germany shook the largest economy of the European Union, since in the event of a cessation of supplies, it faces a reduction of at least 6%.
Earlier Wednesday, July 20, The Globe and Mail reported that one of the turbines for the Nord Stream gas pipeline is already on its way to Europe, while the other five will be delivered to Canada within two years for maintenance.
The turbines needed to service Nord Stream have been under maintenance in Canada since mid-June. Due to Ottawa sanctions, the company could not return them to Russia. Because of this, Gazprom announced the shutdown of three gas pumping units. In this regard, Germany suffered, the flow of gas into the country through the Nord Stream decreased to 40% of the gas pipeline’s capacity. The gas crisis began in Germany. After a few weeks of being in this state, Germany turned to Canada with a request to return the repaired pipe. In Ottawa, they went forward.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz continues to vacillate as he tries to balance between his fellow Greens and Moscow. So, Scholz said that the European Union would not lift the anti-Russian sanctions imposed because of the situation in Ukraine if peace was concluded on Moscow’s terms. At the same time, the politician admitted that the Germans faced the consequences of restrictions.
Back in April, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the refusal of a number of Western countries from normal cooperation with Russia, as well as from part of Russian energy resources, had already hit Europe and the United States. Prices are rising everywhere and inflation is skyrocketing.
