BMW tries to follow in Tesla’s footsteps, and for this reason it has decided to sign an agreement with the Chinese company EVE Energy for the supply of large cylindrical batteries with which it will equip its electric in Europe. A spokesperson for the German giant reported that the Chinese company has signed contracts to become BMW’s main supplier of battery cells for its new range of electric vehicles that will go on sale in Europe. starting in 2025All of these EVs will use the Neue Klasse architecture and will initially focus on the premium mid-size segment such as the 3 Series.
The rivalry with Tesla, which this year has begun to produce its new one, is further ignited 4680 cylindrical battery larger format, which, as can be seen from the “numbering”, is characterized by 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters in length: the forecasts of the US brand speak of a reduction in production costs and an improvement in autonomy compared to the cylindrical battery 2170 of the current generation of electric. It seems that the batteries that EVE Energy will supply to BMW will boast similar size, and will likely be built in a new factory that the Chinese company is planning to build in the mother country. At the moment EVE Energy did not want to comment on the rumors raised by Autonews, while BMW has limited itself to stating that it will release some information relating to the new batteries in early September.
If the agreement is confirmed, EVE Energy it will be added to CATL in the list of cylindrical battery suppliers for BMW starting from 2025. It has not been specified how many batteries the German giant intends to buy from the two Chinese companies, what is certain is that the expectations are very high, so much so that CATL would have decided to build the its first plant in Europe dedicated to the production of these batteries a Debrecen, in Hungary. Recall that CATL produces 48% of the total batteries mounted on EVs in China.
