Agronomist Karpukhin: compacted planting ensures two harvests from one area
To get more harvest, you need to start sowing some crops in February, said Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, Head of the Department of Vegetable and Fruit Growing of the Ural State Agrarian University (Ural State Agricultural University), Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Mikhail Karpukhin. A way to get the harvest earlier and collect more fruits revealed in a conversation with aif.ru.
According to him, already in February you can sow peppers, leeks, and remontant strawberries, in March – tomatoes, eggplants, in April – cucumbers and zucchini. The specialist clarified that if you grow seedlings before May 10 and plant them under temporary film cover, you can get the first zucchini by June 15. “This is great! Including from the point of view of the body’s need for green vegetables, which is especially acute just after winter – in spring and early summer. Agree, in July-August we no longer know what to do with the harvest,” says the agronomist.
He also said that a double harvest from one bed is ensured by compacted planting. “Say, plant mid-season and late-ripening cabbage, and early cabbage between them. At the end of June, the early one was removed, and the rest continues to develop,” the expert explained, adding that all fast-growing crops, for example, radishes, can be grown this way. He recommended planting green salad crops with cucumbers in greenhouses: again radishes and, for example, arugula.
