The official Iranian news agency reported that the accident occurred when a truck collided with a minibus carrying workers on a road linking the city of Khorramshahr in Ahvas in Khuzestan province.
Among the dead were the truck driver and nine workers from the minibus, while three other cars were behind the bus and crashed into each other.
Thirteen wounded were taken to local hospitals near the accident site, the Associated Press reported.
The roads in Iran regularly witness such serial accidents, as 14 people, including eight children, were killed in a traffic accident last March.
Iran has one of the worst traffic safety records in the world, with about 17,000 deaths annually.
Experts attribute these heavy losses to widespread disregard for traffic laws, unsafe vehicles, and inadequate emergency services.
