Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denied statements by the United States and a number of Western countries that the talks on security guarantees would not consider the issue of NATO’s eastward expansion. According to her, the issue will become one of the main issues in the upcoming negotiations with the US and NATO. Comment posted in her personal Telegram-channel.
Zakharova stressed that the key issues at the talks will be the non-expansion of NATO and the non-emergence of weapons systems that threaten the country’s security at the Russian borders. “Those who have not yet grasped the essence of the Russian position should be very clear about this for themselves,” added a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman.
Earlier, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the US would hold security talks with Russia in January. According to her, the details of the negotiations have not been finally agreed at the moment.
At the same time, earlier in December, Psaki said that the United States and Russia are engaged in dialogue at the diplomatic level and are discussing the latter’s proposals on security guarantees. She stressed that the American authorities are no longer ready to agree to some of Moscow’s conditions: in particular, to agreements on the non-expansion of NATO to the east.
