The new Honda NT1100
It had been an open secret for some time that Honda would come up with a new sports tourer based on the Africa Twin. Well, here it is: the NT1100.
What is striking, even before we get the numbers, is that Honda is putting the NT1100 forward as a replacement for the VFR series, although it is a completely different concept, so a high-ranking one. In addition, the front is somewhat reminiscent of the X-ADV from the same house, but on 17-inch wheels. Although the NT name is reminiscent of the Deauville. Given the displacement of 1100cc, we immediately think of the category of Kawasaki’s Versys 1000 or BMW F 900 XR, Ducati Multistrada 950 and Yamaha Tracer 9, with Honda once again squeezing itself a bit between all competitors, rather than right next to a particular competitor. and thus avoid direct comparison. Or stick a finger in every pot, depending on how you look at it.
With 1100cc it is in the higher regions of that segment, but the power figure of 102 hp is lower than with the others, whereby we can already conclude that Honda will fully focus on power at the bottom, using the 105 Nm of torque, rather then top power. You can decide for yourself whether you want to go gear shifting with a standard gearbox or a DCT variant. At 248 kilograms, the latter weighs 10 kilograms more than the version with a traditional gearbox. In terms of electronics, we also note traction control, wheely control and ABS, both of which are adjustable. The lighting is full-LED, the direction indicators switch off automatically. And you have three standard driving modes, plus two manually adjustable variants. The Africa Twin engine is suspended in a steel cradle frame, also inherited from the Africa Twin, with 43mm Showa front forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear that is adjustable for preload. The saddle height is 820 mm.
In addition to the fairly sturdy bodywork with 5-way adjustable windscreen, the very high dashboard stands out, with a very complete touchscreen, full of colors, 6.5 inch TFT screen, with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, including connectivity with your mobile phone. Judging by the photos, you can even check the weather, receive news or check the calendar on your dashboard. Handy if you see that the weather is bad at home, a corona outbreak is reported in the village and you better keep touring, but want to get home on time for the dog’s birthday … Something with 20 liters to peut should succeed, Honda itself speaks of a range of 400 kilometers. A bit unusual is the separate LCD screen with which the speed, mileage and acceleration are indicated.
Honda also speaks of three settings of that TFT display with different information, called “Gold,” “Silver” and “Bronze,” which focus on riding modes, speedometer, or tachometer, respectively. Standard equipment includes cruise control, heated grips, centerstand, USB port and ACC port and integrated side cases. Those cases have been deliberately kept narrow, just 901mm of combined width, for smoother city traffic, but can still handle 32 and 33 liters of luggage. Optionally, you can choose from three packages: the Urban pack (50 liter top box, passenger backrest and tank bag), Touring Pack (comfort seats, comfortable passenger footrests and fog lights), Voyage Pack (combination of all options from Urban and Touring pack). The colors you can choose from are silver-grey, white and black.
