Two senior officials from Aragón traveled in an official car through the Ordesa meadow, restricted to traffic and full of hikers

If there is a busy area in the Aragonese Pyrenees during the summer months, it is the Ordesa meadow on the track that leads to the famous Cola de Caballo, in the heart of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. And more from mid-morning. On July 25, around 11:00, the general directors of the Natural Environment -Alfonso Calvo- and of Culture -Pedro Olloqui- of the Government of Aragon decided to travel along that road in an official vehicle with two companions, as reported United Left and eyewitnesses have confirmed. They did it, according to the regional Executive, to “look for new enclaves” where they could plan activities such as “concerts.”

It is a restricted traffic route, since during the central hours of the day it welcomes hundreds of visitors, including children and the elderly. The forestry employees and agents themselves who are forced to use a vehicle choose to do so either first thing in the morning – up to 8:30 a.m. at the latest – or late in the morning, to minimize risks such as being run over or being hit by stones on pedestrians.

The general coordinator and spokesman for Izquierda Unida in the Cortes of Aragón, Álvaro Sanz, recorded a parliamentary question weeks ago in which he questioned the Government of Aragón about the reasons for the visit and the identification of the people who accessed it in this very way. “exclusive” in the vehicle.

The IU deputy points out that the Government of Aragon has avoided giving specific data in its response about the “privileged” and reckless “access of its senior officials, as well as the names of their companions, but confirmed that cultural actions are being proposed in the Park National, to give a “different and complementary role” to traditional use, opening it to new trends in the comprehensive and multifaceted management of the most emblematic natural environments.

“Mandatory authorization”

The Executive itself has confirmed to this newspaper that the visit of both general directors had “the mandatory authorization.” Its objective was “to look for new enclaves to carry out cultural activities in the National Park (concerts, etc.), as has already been done in other spaces in the department, such as San Juan de la Peña”, a space that, however, does not have the level of protection that exists in Ordesa.

For Sanz, “the current Government of Aragon’s lack of interest in environmental protection is confirmed, which only understands nature as an economic resource or an obstacle and subjects the conservation of natural spaces to economic activities.” The spokesman for Izquierda Unida calls the actions of the representatives of the regional Executive who accessed the main track of the central sector of the Ordesa Valley, on a date of maximum influx of visitors, “recklessness”, “arrogance” and “arrogance”. and at an “inappropriate” hour, with the aim of assessing the promotion of activities that are expressly prohibited in the highly protected and regulated area due to their environmental value, classified as incompatible with the purposes of the National Park in the Master Plan for Use and Management. .
