The Japanese video game market is dominated by two big forces: mobile and Nintendo. Everything else gets varying degrees of success, with Xbox failing as usual to find a real space (although the Xbox Series X|S all in all sells a decent amount of units every week for the company’s standards) and with PlayStation which is always too far from Nintendo to be a real threat.
Of course it doesn’t mean that PS5 has not sold in Japan and, recently, the platform has reached a new sales milestone.
PS5 Sales and Future Outlook
According to Japanese weekly sales data recently released by Famitsu, PS5 sold over 33,000 units in the week ending September 1, bringing its total sales in Japan to over 6 million units.
It should also be noted that this was the last week before a significant price increase went into effect for the console and its accessories, which means we can expect relatively lower sales at least for the immediate future. Interested customers have taken advantage of the unincreased price, and buyers will likely prefer to leave the console on the shelves for a while.
Looking further ahead, it is possible that PS5 Pro will help to reinvigorate the Japanese market a bit (as well as the global one obviously) but much will depend on the advantages of this platform as well as (if not above all) on the price.
In the meantime, however, the PS5 DualSense controller has increased in price, even in Italy.
