BI: US cuts gas supplies to Europe, preventing it from abandoning Russian fuel
The US is cutting gas supplies to Europe, thereby making it more difficult to abandon Russian fuel, reports Business Insider.
At the end of July, Europe imported 1.5 million metric tons of LNG from the United States, while imports from Russia amounted to 1.3 million tons, the article says. The difference in the volume of supplies to the continent continues to narrow, with the United States sending goods to countries that pay more, such as Asia.
The author of the article concludes that continued fuel imports complicate European plans to wean off Russian gas.
Earlier, Dutch MEP Tom Berendsen spoke about the risk of becoming dependent on gas supplies from Russia and thus falling into Russia’s “trap”.
“Russia is using reduced gas prices to push other suppliers out of the market. Member States are thus already abandoning the first projects that could attract new gas suppliers. Such decisions make it impossible in the short term to achieve the European Commission’s goal of becoming independent from Russian gas by 2027,” he said in his address to the European Commission.
