Yesterday what could be remembered as one of the last Nintendo Directs completely dedicated to Nintendo Switch. The old console of the big N has shown off its muscles although theoretically she is reaching her last moments of life (allegedly, there are no announcements or confirmations for the arrival of the new console, although there is talk of March 2025).
What we have to ask ourselves, therefore, is how many they will actually have need to buy Nintendo Switch 2 at launch.
There are too many games, dammit
Let’s be clear, we know very well that there will be a group of hardcore fans who won’t wait a second and will buy the new platform without any kind of doubt, throwing handfuls of counter towards the counter of a frightened GameStop employee or drooling in front of the window waiting for Amazon’s delivery.
At the same time, it is there who will wait the arrival of a less expensive model or simply discounts before purchasing the console, regardless of any detail.
What we are interested in is the middle audience who has yet to genuinely decide what to do. Of course, technical details on the platform and price will also be needed, but for now we don’t have them and we find it useless to speculate. However, we believe that there is another factor to take into consideration: the number of games publishedbut not those that will arrive with the new Nintendo console, but those that are already in circulation now and that will be released in the next few months.
Nintendo’s list of very high-quality games released in the last couple of years and those arriving in the next few months dwarfs its direct competitors and, in all honesty, we don’t believe that the entire Nintendo Switch audience has already caught up on everything to he is interested in, especially if he also plays on other platforms.
Let’s add that some launch games will most likely be cross-gen (we expect some exclusives, but not all) because it is unthinkable to completely abandon all Switch players. Furthermore, although Nintendo Switch 2 may offer technological advancement, a good portion of the public does not buy the Nintendo console for the graphics.
Our honest impression is that Nintendo is even releasing too many games, of too high quality, to push the public to really feel the need for a new platform. Nintendo never stops making us dream and, as absurd as it may seem, sometimes it is almost a problem for business in the very short term (in the long term, however, it is the reason for success). It would be nice if all companies had this problem.
But tell us, right now, do you really feel the need to buy Nintendo Switch 2 if it arrives in March 2025?
